The accomplishments of Basel mathematicians - in particular the Bernoulli dynasty and Leonhard Euler - have been the city's most significant contribution to European culture in the 17th and 18th centuries. To enhance public awareness of this fact, a small competition will try to bring the fascination of this science closer to the general public. For several weeks the trams and buses of the Basel Transport Services will carry posters proposing, under the logo of the Euler Tercentenary, problems whose solutions depend less on specific knowledge than on curiosity and creative thinking.
The problems will also appear on this website, and prizes will be given for the best solution of each week's problem and for the highest scores in the entire competition.
